Field Trip for Social Studies

We will be covering five main topics in social studies this year. These topics include: History, Civics and Government, Geography, Economics, and Individuals, Society, and Culture. All of these topics will be broken down to a first grade level that can be understood by the students. The first thing our class will study is what the word community means. We will look at what community we live in, and how we each fit into our community around us. After that we will view how other communities around the world interact, and how we each fit into those communities.

We will be taking a field trip to our town hall in two weeks on Wednesday, October 10. Touring the town hall will allow the students to see an aspect of our community and ask questions about it as well. I will be sending home a field trip permission slip this week which is due October 1. We will need at least four adults to accompany our field trip. If you are interested in chaperoning, indicate so on the permission slip. Let's go explore our community!

Magical Math

This year in math we will be accomplishing counting to 120 and learning our shapes. Our major goals for the year arelearning how to add  and do
simple subtraction. We will work on adding double digit numbers depending on how the
students are doing adding simple  problems. Another large focus for math this year is
addition word problems. Math activities and games will be used as a teaching technique to
engage the students.

Math is often hard for students so to increase their success and learning, it is important to practice math facts at home. A fun game that helps with addition and subtraction facts is called Dice Math Facts. You take two dice and roll them both; whatever two numbers get rolled are either added or subtracted together! There can be two players that take turns and whoever gets the most problems correct at the end of the game wins! Practice practice!

This year we will be doing a reading unit on Eric Carle. Eric Carle is one of the most famous authors of children's books. Carle's books teach children about the world around them as he makes the stories come to life. Some of Eric Carle's most famous books include:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar The Grouchy Ladybug, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?, The Grouchy Ladybug, The Mixed-Up Chameleon, The Very Busy Spider, and many more.
The first Eric Carle book we will focus on is
The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

.

We will do many activities with this unit including plays, projects, crafts, and many more. Once we have finished our unit on Eric Carle, our class will be skyping Eric Carle! Eric Carle will read us one or two of his books, will tell us about his life and his books, and the students will get to ask Eric Carle questions. This is very exciting and a great opportunity for students to get involved with their reading!

Rocket Reading

Calling all readers! On September 30, 2013 in the library, there  will be a reading party after school for all students. Each student needs to bring two dollars to get unlimited beverages and snacks. The party will start right after school and will end at 4:00. Parents are welcome to  attend this event and read with their child.  The party will get students excited about reading and will be beneficial to their learning; don’t forget to send your student with two  dollars!

Meet the Teacher

My name is Katelyn Corya and I will be your child’s first grade teacher this year at Hillside Elementary School. I graduated last year from Taylor University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with  a certification in Special Education.
Prior to living at Taylor University, I lived in Brownsburg, Indiana and graduated from Brownsburg High School.
I enjoy being outdoors, reading, attending all forms of musical performances, singing, playing the piano and traveling. I am looking forward to getting to know your children; I want to
inspire the students in my classroom and get them excited about learning!
